- Health and Safety
Mallorca offers all kinds of possibilities for health care from public health centers to private clinics. Read on and find out more about health and safety on Mallorca. Health Care + Emergencies on Mallorca Before you leave home, it’s wise to check with your health- and travel insurance at home what they do cover and what not. When you are on the island, you can go to local health centers for health care. You will need to show them your health insurance, and most probably pay cash for the received treatment. You can also visit private clinics for health care. In general you’ll be helped quicker, but it will also cost more. In case of COVID-19, you can also contact the Balearic health Service on 902 079 079 , +34 971437079 , or call 061 in the event of more serious symptoms. For all other emergencies (Police, Ambulance + Fire), you can phone 122. TIP | Check IB-SALUT.com in case you wish to know more about health care and emergencies on Mallorca or for emergencies numbers on Mallorca, check Mallorca.org. Covid-19 Rules + Regulations Illesbalears.travel gives you a good overview of most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about COVID-19 on the Balearic Islands, which Mallorca is part of. Their information on recommendations and measures can help you plan your trip and ensure you visit us with all safety guarantees in place. More Rules & Regulations on Mallorca Whenever you’re spending time in another country than your own, you’ll notice that there’s a different etiquette on what’s proper behaviour and what’s allowed and what’s not. And in some cases, this isn’t always obvious. What to do? Do as the locals do and/or read up on local etiquette. Mallorca in general has a lot of rules & regulations , and there’re too many to name them all. One important one though for men especially, is that t-shirts need to stay on. Only on the beach, you’re allowed to take t-shirts off, but in the towns and villages, clothes need to be on and you need to be properly dressed. Women included. We couldn’t find a proper list of what rules & fines are out there, but we would like to warn you that fines are high on Mallorca. The best thing to do? Respect the island customs on what’s accepted and proper behaviour. So, at least no nudity in public, no drinking in public and no noise pollution.
- Spanish Mealtimes
Life has a different pace on Mallorca. Most shops and businesses are usually open from Monday until Saturday and some are even open on Sunday mornings. Sunday is normally the day to be with family and friends as well as on the many festive days ( Fiestas and public holidays ) that Spain has throughout the year. What we think is best? Surrender to the local pace. Live life like a local and adjust to the daily routine by following the rhythm of the island, that includes the Spanish mealtimes. Spanish Mealtimes Depending on what season you visit Mallorca, it’s best to start your daily early and see the sun rise and enjoy its warmth when it’s still doable in the morning. And it’s best to follow the Spanish meal times in case you’d like to live life like a local, mingle with the local community and not go hungry ;)! 1 - Life here begins with a coffee and something sweet for breakfast. When you go to local bars, you will see that breakfast is served often as early as 7:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Breakfast ( el desayuno ) is often a coffee & croissant or a ‘tostada con tomate’ (roasted bread with chopped tomatoes, salt + olive oil). 2 - Around 10:00 is the time that you will find people gathering at a bar for a ‘Pa amb oli’ ( bread with oil). You say [Pamboli] and it comes in all kinds of variations, not only with tomatoes and olive oil. 3 - Between 12:00-16:00 it’s time for lunch ( el amuerzo ) and the best deal is to get a daily menu at one of the local (Spanish owned and run) restaurants. You can find these menus for as little as €9.50 and you will get a 3-course meal with water or wine for that price. 4 - Around 17:00 it’s not time for dinner, but an afternoon bite like a coffee + cake . At around 20:00 people often gather for drinks and some tapas after work, as work finishes around this time. 5 - Dinner ( La Cena ) is served later at night and often after 21:30. This can be a whole meal for dinner again, or something light like a soup, salad or some tapas. 6- If you still have some energy left, you can join the local crowd for some stronger copas & spirits after 23:00 and onwards.
- Opening hours shops
Business hours and opening hours of shops in Spain and on Mallorca are different from for example in most northern European countries. Read on and find out more about business hours in Spain. Opening hours shops on Mallorca In general, most shops are closed during the afternoon, however bigger stores like the bigger supermarkets can be open during the day and most shops are open on the weekends and even Sunday morning until 12:00 PM. It’s advisable to check the opening hours of shops you wish to go to before you go . Or visit them either in the morning in between 9:30-12:00 or in the afternoon in between 17:00-20:00. Only do know that these opening hours vary per shop. Spain also has various festivities and celebrations, and on these festive days most shops will most certainly also be closed. Where can you best check the opening hours? On the door of the shop itself, since websites aren’t always up-to-date. And phoning them in advance can be an idea too, as answering emails often seems to take quite some time in Spain, if they are answered at all. This is not to be negative, it’s just what we have noticed ourselves on what works and what doesn’t.
